Red Alley by seussman71 Red Alley by seussman71
While visiting my family in Grand Junction, Colorado, we happened to be walking downtown one day, and stopped at a coffee shop in this short "alley." There was this one tree that had most of it's leaves left, and they were this beautiful color of red. I had been wanting to do a photomanipulation shot like this where I get rid of all the color except the one that really stands out to further push it into the limelight, and I think I succeeeded with this shot.

Photoshop and a lot of mouse work to make sure all I put in color were the leaves. A bit of other touch-ups, but not much in the realm of color...the leaves were brilliant all by themselves.

Thanks for the comment! Yeah, that downtown area looks like it would be great for skateboarding...enough alleys and throughways to get to all the right areas...have they built an official skate park there, yet? They were talking about it a while back.

really really pretty. i like the idea so much. the grey and pinkish color of the leaves works so well together. the fact that the tree is in a neglected alleyway just adds to the lonesome and isolated feel. It also makes you think of how we see things and really trying to appreciate the gorgeous colors all around us.

Thank you SO much for the comment! It really did feel that lonesome and neglected and isolated that day. It was a bit grey out, but then to see this tree -- it just stood out from almost everything in the area. It was almost like it wanted to say, "hey, I'm still here and I'm still alive - look at me." I'm the first to admit that I don't appreciate the things around me as often as I should, so thank you for hitting the feelings on the head!

Wow, I have been to this alley before, and I live in Ohio. I visit G.J. every year and I know where this is :)

Wow! Very cool! I barely get there every few years, and my mom lives there...of course kids make things like a 4-hour trip from Denver a bit more difficult, but hopefully in the coming years I can take them there and kick around the downtown area like I used to do.

Thanks for the comment!

Sorry it took so long for me to get back to you on this comment, and thank you very much for the kind words.

I think ownership did change (according to my step-dad)...the previous owners needed a bigger place. Whoever the new owners are, they DEFINITELY need to do something to that area...it could be such a great place to hang out and drink coffee, people watch, etc.

Thanks for the great comments!

Nicely done, i have always enjoyed this type of effect in music videos, but after trying it like you did and realising that its a whole load of donkey work in photoshop, i am left in wonderment as to how to how they do it in the videos. Nonetheless, this is a great attempt, and you deserve a fave for effort alone anyway so....

hameed,

Seriously...getting that kind of a comment from a mega-artist such as yourself is very flattering. Thanks a ton, and I'm glad you enjoyed what I did with it. This was one of my first attempts, so maybe I need to continue down this path and make it a point to get better at this type of shot. It was a lot of fun, even if it was a lot of work.

Cheers, from the guy that loves your work,

It's totally awesome. I am from Grand Junction myself, but moved to Wisconsin when I was around 4 years old and so I don't remember Grand Junction. I live in Minnesota now, but not for good....gonna move someplace warm when I graduate and get a job.

Lucia,

Thanks for the comment! Grand Junction is a pretty decent place to be, although they are a bit behind the times. I like the small-town feel while still enjoying the larger-town/city amenities when you need them.

Their downtown area is my favorite place, because it reminds me of a 1950's town. Some very cool shops down there, and always lots of fun little side shops down mini-alleys like this one.

You should go back and visit just to check it out.

p.s. I was born in Wisconsin (Oshkosh, B'Gosh, to be exact), then moved to Colorado...heh.

Yeah, I am hoping to go back to Colorado to visit my aunt sometime soon...I am just waiting until my aunt can get enough money together for me to fly over there. She works in the Graphic Design field and I think she works freelance or independently so her income isn't always steady and oftentimes she is tight with money and on top of this, she has a small son to raise all by herself. I think it'd be nice to go to Denver (where my aunt lives now) for Christmas and go skiing. Normally I HATE winter, but I don't mind it so much if I could go skiing or snowmobiling. And the mountains there would look so pretty snow-capped, don't you think?

It's funny that I moved to Wisconsin from Colorado and you moved from Wisconsin to Colorado, LOL...I grew up in Milwaukee, about 2 and a half hours from Oshkosh. I live in Minnesota and I do like it here a lot, but I plan to move somewhere warm all year round when I graduate and get a job offer from a warm place...I am not settling here in Minnesota...I am just only staying here until I finish college, and also to get away from my crazy dad and his bitch wife (Looooooooong story, I can tell you all about it later if you want).

Well, take care.

I love this, great use of selective color. The red isn't as vivid as it could be but other than that this is one of the best photos I've seen today.

Thanks!

Yeah, I thought about beefing up the red, but I kind of wanted to show how vibrant the red is without any touch-ups. Thanks for the kudos, and I look forward to putting more up soon, so please check back.

Cheers!
